How do I check the right IP rating for my installation?

Our bathroom zone guide recommends IP65 or higher in Zone 1, at least IP44 in Zone 2, and IP65 or above outdoors. Armitage Shanks Septa Pro M1 Metal Dual Flush Plate in Chrome

An anti-vandal metal dual flush plate built for commercial washrooms. Zinc die cast rather than plastic, chromium-plated to a glossy chrome finish and rated by Armitage Shanks as anti-vandal.

The Septa Pro M1 is the plate you specify when a washroom takes a beating. It measures 243mm wide by 163mm high, projects 17mm and weighs 1.02kg, which is close to three times a comparable plastic plate. Both buttons still press at under 20N, the flush is mechanically operated in the event of a power failure, and the chrome carries a SmartShine surface that wipes clean without a cleaner.

Zinc die cast metal, not plastic

The plate is metal rather than moulded plastic, which is why it weighs 1.02kg against roughly a third of that for a plastic plate. It is chromium-plated to a glossy chrome finish and carries a SmartShine surface that keeps marks and water spotting easier to wipe away.

Anti-vandal rated for public washrooms

Armitage Shanks list the S0858AA as anti-vandal. That is the reason to specify it over a domestic plate in a school, a leisure centre or any washroom that sees heavy or careless use. Both buttons still press at under 20N so it stays easy for everyone to operate.

What makes the Septa Pro M1 an anti-vandal flush plate?

Two things. The plate is zinc die cast metal rather than moulded plastic, so it resists being levered off or cracked, and Armitage Shanks rate the S0858AA as anti-vandal on its datasheet. At 1.02kg it is close to three times the weight of a comparable plastic plate, which is the difference you feel when you handle it.

Will it fit my concealed cistern?

It is made for ProSys mechanical actuation WC frames and concealed cisterns. If the frame is ProSys and uses mechanical rather than pneumatic or electronic actuation then this plate is the right fit. It will not connect to another manufacturer's frame, so confirm what is behind the wall before ordering.

Are the activation rods included?

No, and this is the one thing to watch. The mounting frame and connector rods are supplied but the activation rods are not, so check what your cistern already has before you order. That differs from the Oleas plates, where the activation rods are in the box.

How does this compare with the Oleas plates?

The Septa Pro M1 is the commercial choice. It is metal, anti-vandal rated and projects 17mm from the wall. The Oleas M3 in matt black and the Oleas M2 in brushed chrome are ABS plastic, not anti-vandal rated, and sit only 8.5mm proud. For a home the Oleas plates look sleeker. For a public washroom the Septa Pro is the one that survives.

What is SmartShine?

It is a surface treatment Armitage Shanks apply to the chrome. In practice it means fingerprints, toothpaste splashes and water spotting wipe off with a damp cloth rather than needing a cleaner. On a plate that gets touched hundreds of times a day in a public washroom that saves real cleaning time.

How far does the plate stand off the wall?

The projection is 17mm, so noticeably more than a slimline domestic plate. That is a consequence of the metal construction and the anti-vandal fixing. Worth knowing if you are matching it against an existing recess or a tight tile detail.

Does it work during a power cut?

Yes. The mechanism is entirely mechanical with no sensor, battery or mains supply, so the buttons act on the cistern valve exactly as they always do. Armitage Shanks list it as mechanically operated in the event of a power failure.

Is it suitable for a home bathroom?

It will work perfectly well, but Armitage Shanks specify it for education, healthcare, hotel, leisure and office use rather than residential. In a domestic bathroom you are paying for durability you will not need and accepting a chunkier 17mm profile. The Oleas M2 is the better domestic choice.

Can the flush volumes be adjusted at the plate?

No. The two volumes are set by the valve inside the cistern, so any adjustment is made there rather than at the plate. This is normal for mechanical dual flush plates.

What else do I need for a full installation?

The ProSys frame and cistern if you are starting from scratch, the activation rods for your cistern, and a compatible pan such as the RAK Moon rimless wall hung WC pan. Tell us the frame model and we will confirm the parts list before you order.
