The Salamander CWCOND03 is a whole house water conditioner for hard-water properties with a high incoming flow rate. It fits in-line on the cold water rising main, just after the mains stop tap, so every tap, shower, cylinder and appliance downstream is fed with conditioned water. It is the largest of the two whole-house sizes Kent Traders stocks: 330mm long x 35mm diameter, with 3/4" BSP tapered (BSP-T) male threads at each end, rated for flow rates of 24 to 54 litres per minute.

It is a catalytic water conditioner, not a water softener - and the difference matters. Salamander's conditioners use an alloy core that changes the calcium carbonate in your water from calcite to aragonite. Nothing is added and nothing is taken out, so the water stays safe to drink; the minerals are still there, but in a form that is far less inclined to stick to pipework, heating elements and shower nozzles. In Salamander's own words, a conditioner "does not remove the minerals that cause the hardness" and "does not soften water because calcium minerals remain in the water". If you want genuinely soft water - more soap lather, no spotting on glassware - that needs a salt-based softener, which is a different product with salt to top up and waste water to drain.

Because there is no salt, no chemicals, no electrical connection and no filter cartridge, there is nothing to top up and nothing to replace. It is maintenance free with no ongoing running costs, WRAS approved, and comes with a 10-year warranty. Not sure this is the right size? Sizing is decided by measured flow rate, not by guesswork. Three quick checks before you order.

Measure the flow rate of your incoming mains, in litres per minute. Salamander is explicit that water conditioners are sized on the amount of water flowing through them, and warns that choosing the wrong size - including a diameter larger than you need - "can compromise water delivery and affect treatment quality". CWCOND03 is the 24-54 L/min unit. If your measured flow is below 24 L/min, you want the smaller CWCOND02 (3-25 L/min) instead.

Check your pipework and thread size. This unit has 3/4" BSP tapered male threads at both ends, and Salamander supplies 22mm x 3/4" F fittings in the box - so out of the box it is set up to go into 22mm pipe. If your rising main is 15mm, the CWCOND02 with its 15mm x 1/2" F brass fittings is the natural match.

This is a whole-house, point-of-entry unit - not a point-of-use one. Salamander recommends fitting the 1/2" and 3/4" whole house conditioners after the stop tap where the mains enters the property, so the whole building gets conditioned water. It is not designed to screw onto a shower hose or mixer outlet; that is a different, much shorter product in Salamander's range.

Both figures are Salamander's own. The ranges overlap slightly at 24-25 L/min; if you measure in that band, either will work, and Salamander's guidance is that where flow is on the low side, or the pipe already has heavy scale inside it, a conditioner one size smaller than the pipe diameter is preferred. Measure first - see the CWCOND02 listing for the smaller option.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a water softener? Will my water feel soft?
No. This is a catalytic water conditioner, which is a different technology. A softener uses salt and ion-exchange resin to physically remove the hardness minerals; a conditioner leaves them in the water but changes their crystal form so they are much less inclined to stick and form scale. Salamander's own guidance puts it plainly: a conditioner "does not remove the minerals that cause the hardness" and "does not soften water because calcium minerals remain in the water". So you should expect less scale building up in pipework, appliances and around fittings - but not the extra soap lather or the "slippery" feel you get from a salt-based softener. The trade-off is that there is no salt to buy, no waste water and no maintenance.
Should I buy CWCOND03 or CWCOND02?
It depends on your measured incoming mains flow rate, not on the size of your house. CWCOND03 (this page) is 330 x 35mm with 3/4" BSP-T threads, supplied with 22mm x 3/4" F fittings, and covers 24-54 L/min. The CWCOND02 is 300 x 28mm with 1/2" BSP-T threads, supplied with 15mm x 1/2" F brass fittings, and covers 3-25 L/min - which is where most standard 15mm UK domestic mains land. Salamander warns that oversizing can compromise water delivery and treatment quality, so measure before ordering rather than buying the bigger one to be safe.
Where exactly does it go, and can I fit it vertically?
Salamander recommends fitting the whole house conditioners on the cold water rising main just after the stop tap where the mains enters the property, so everything downstream gets conditioned water. It can be installed horizontally or vertically. It is directional - there is a flow arrow engraved on the outside diameter, and it must be fitted the right way round. Turn the supply off at the stop tap, drain the section of pipe, cut in the unit using the supplied 22mm x 3/4" F fittings, then restore pressure slowly and check for leaks. No wiring is needed. Because it involves cutting into the incoming main, we would suggest a competent plumber does the work.
What if there is no room to fit it after the stop tap?
Salamander gives two alternatives. On an open-vented (gravity) system it can be fitted further downstream, feeding the cold water storage tank in the loft, which means the water going on to the hot water cylinder is conditioned. On a mains-fed system it should sit before any appliances such as a combi boiler or unvented cylinder, and ideally before any Salamander booster product. In some layouts it may have to go after the kitchen cold drinking tap.
Will it protect a shower pump or a shower head?
It protects household appliances including a shower pump, and helps keep shower heads and other fittings free of scale build-up and easier to clean. Worth being precise about how that works, though: this is a whole-house in-line unit sized on your incoming mains flow rate - it is not a filter that goes on a shower hose, and it treats the supply rather than the individual outlet. If your household runs a gravity-fed pumped shower such as the Salamander Ora 2.0 shower pump, note that the flow reaching a single pumped shower is far lower than 24 L/min, so the sizing decision is still made on the mains flow entering the property - and on many such properties that points to the smaller CWCOND02. Equally, if you are fitting a high-performance head such as the Grohe Rainshower SmartActive 310 in a hard-water area, conditioning the incoming supply helps keep scale off the spray nozzles - but it is scale treatment for the whole property, not a nozzle filter.
Is the water still safe to drink, and does it need any maintenance?
Yes, it stays drinkable - Salamander's answer is that "nothing has been added or taken away from the water", and the process uses no chemicals and no salt. The unit is WRAS approved and rated to a maximum pressure of 10 bar. There is no maintenance: no cartridges, no salt to top up, no electrical supply and no ongoing running costs, and it comes with a 10-year warranty. One point of accuracy worth knowing: Salamander notes that if conditioned water is then stored in a closed system such as a tank, it remains conditioned for around three months, because aragonite gradually reverts to calcite once exposed to normal atmospheric conditions.
