What depth back box do I need?
25mm for most flush single sockets and switches, 35mm for double sockets and dimmers, and 47mm for deep fittings or many conductors.
What is a surface pattress?
A box that mounts on the wall face to hold an accessory where you cannot recess a box into the wall.

Use a metal box for masonry and a dry-lining (grip-lug) box for plasterboard and stud walls.
