British General's three core wiring accessory families cover almost every UK project — but they suit different rooms, budgets and walls. Here's how Nexus Metal, Nexus Screwless and White Moulded (800 & 900 Series) compare, and where each earns its place.
At a glance
- Nexus Metal — raised metal plate, six finishes (brushed steel, polished chrome, black nickel, matt black, antique brass, pearl nickel). Robust, forgiving of uneven walls, mid-price. The workhorse for visible areas.
- Nexus Screwless — flat plate with clip-on front hiding all screws. Cleanest look; needs flush, level back boxes. Premium price; four core finishes.
- White Moulded 800 Series and 900 Series — white urea/thermoset plates. Lowest cost, huge functional range. 900 Series adds a softer curved profile and wider plate options. The default for bedrooms, back-of-house, HMOs and rentals.
How to decide
By room
- Kitchens, living rooms, hotel bedrooms & corridors: Nexus Metal or Screwless — finish consistency matters where guests and buyers look.
- Utility, lofts, plant rooms, budget lets: White Moulded — identical electrical spec, fraction of the cost.
- Feature walls & high-design refurbs: Screwless (or step up to BG Evolve for edge-to-edge slimline styling in eight finishes — see our Nexus vs Evolve comparison).
By wall condition
Raised Nexus Metal plates tolerate slightly proud or out-of-square boxes; Screwless plates telegraph every imperfection. On older solid walls being re-used without re-plastering, Metal is the safer specification. Check depths in our back box guide — USB and dimmer variants want 25–35mm.
By budget (typical double socket, relative)
- White Moulded — £ (baseline)
- Nexus Metal — ££ (roughly 2–3× moulded)
- Nexus Screwless — £££ (roughly 3–4× moulded)
Mixing ranges on one project
A common hotel and refurb specification: Screwless or Metal in guest-facing areas, 800/900 Series in service areas — all BG, so switching logic, module compatibility and warranty stay consistent. All three families fit standard UK back boxes and are 2-way switching as standard. For bespoke switch banks (appliance labels, key switches, dimmer mixes) use the custom grid kit builder.
FAQs
Is Nexus Screwless the same spec as Nexus Metal underneath?
Electrically the ranges are equivalent — the difference is the plate construction and fixing method. Screwless uses a clip-on front over a screwed subframe.
What's the difference between 800 and 900 Series White Moulded?
Both are BG's white thermoset ranges; the 900 Series has a more rounded, contemporary profile and some additional plate formats. Function-for-function they're interchangeable.
Which BG range is best for hotels?
Most of our hotel clients fit Nexus Metal or Screwless in guest rooms and corridors with USB variants at bedsides, and White Moulded in back-of-house — see the hospitality buying guide.
